What are the benefits of counselling?

There are many benefits of counselling but I believe the most important reason to start is to get in touch with ourselves and our needs. When we know how we feel, what we want, and have good communication skills we can overcome obstacles and live fulfilling lives. This takes practice, guidance, and hope. As a counsellor, my aim is for you to be able to implement the knowledge you gain through counselling to overcome the hurtles life throws at you. It isn’t about avoiding feelings or pain, it is about working with them and finding balance between our feelings and logical brain.

Are there drawbacks to counselling?

Yes, counselling can open up past wounds and pain. This process is natural but you may not always feel better after a session. It is important that your counsellor debriefs the session with you and focuses on supporting you if you are triggered. Counselling and healing are hard, but the end result is worth it.
